The Oncology Institute

Founded in 2007, publicly-traded The Oncology Institute, Inc. (NASDAQ: TOI) is one of the largest value-based community oncology groups in the United States. The company operates 62 clinics in fives states and employs over 700 team members including healthcare and pharmacy professionals,  clinical researchers and a corporate team. The company services traditionally underserved populations including immigrants and those financially disadvantaged.

Many of the clinics are located in high-density immigrant neighborhoods. Physicians speak over 20 languages.

Oncology is a $200 billion dollar industry and growing. Unlike the traditional fee-for-service model which often incentivizes over prescription and unnecessary treatments without leading to an improvement of patients’ quality of life or symptoms, TOI’s value-based oncology care provides patients with high-quality oncology care while also minimizing unnecessary treatment including over prescription. The value-care model prioritizes treatments that generate an improvement of patients’ quality of life, mental health, symptom reduction or the elimination of the disease. TOI measures certain quality of care metrics such as depression and visits to the ER to ensure care is maximized while at the same time eliminating the financial toxicity that affects many oncology patients and their families.

The company is experiencing tremendous success. In 2022 the company added six clinics in three states and over 100 new employees. Additionally, the company’s largest investor provided an influx of $110 million in additional investment. In these situations when large groups of employees are hired within a short period of time, it is important to establish a strong company culture to keep breeding success. Juan F. Lezama was hired to help manage communications including public relations and internal communications. Lezama works closely with the company’s executives, HR and Culture teams to ensure consistency in developing communications for its team members. Maximizing organizational pride, forging stronger connections among teammates and conveying the importance of diversity and inclusion for the company.
